Before redoing my blog, I actually planned on video blogging. I have a few ideas for videos, so I started setting up my youtube channel and everything. When I went to setup my channel though, it made me realize that I needed to work on a logo.
The first thing I had to do was choose a name. I knew I wanted to blog about my life in Vietnam, but I wanted something a little more fun than “Peter in Vietnam.” I quickly decided on “Nguyening in Vietnam.” FYI, Nguyen in the US is often pronounced like “win.” So there’s a few puns with “Nguyening.”
After decided on a name, the first thing I had to do was pick a font.
Basically I just wrote out my text, and kept switching fonts until I had a few that I liked.
In my mind, I was already going to use a map of VN and somehow place the text around it. So that meant I was going to have a fairly simple logo. So I went over to colourlovers to check out some color combinations. After picking two different color combos, I combined them and made my own.
At this point, I knew I wasn’t just going to design a youtube channel logo but also redo my blog. I didn’t want to buy a new domain for my blog, so I decided that my peternguyen.me logo and the Nguyening in Vietnam logo had to relate to each other. Easy enough, both have “Nguyen” in the name so I decided to just set the same color for both Nguyens.
I couldn’t really get the map of VN to work, so I started googling “cute logos,” because I wanted some inspiration for what to do next. Saw that a bunch of logos used cute characters, so I figured I’d try drawing a cartoon version of me. I like the “chibi” style, so I found a base form for drawing chibi characters and started drawing it out in Illustrator.
The hardest part of drawing this out was trying to figure out what my hair would look like. The second hardest part? Drawing the shapes in the correct order to build the shapes right.
And that was basically it for this one. Had to play with colors and styles for the character, but overall pretty straight forward I’d say.
