Building a Slackbot: Getting Started 2

June 21, 2017: The research!

Jetlag is getting a little better. Went to bed at 10pm and woke up around 4:30am today. My plan is start doing some basic setup and reading about how to create a slackbot. The first guide I’m looking at is here.

Step 1: Install nodejs

What’s nodejs? I have no idea.. haha. According to the site it’s “Node.js® is a JavaScript runtime built on Chrome’s V8 JavaScript engine. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient. Node.js’ package ecosystem, npm, is the largest ecosystem of open source libraries in the world.” I still have no idea what that means, but whatever.

I guess I’m most users? (Actually I asked some people and they said to just download the newest version)

Step 2: Already got confused! Haha so I was going through the tutorial and then didn’t really get how to use npm. Got some errors. Found another tutorial here. Got node installed and npm installed the slackbot but then didn’t really know where to start building haha. So I went back to chingu central and asked if anyone if they wanted to help me build a slackbot and bam! Got 4 people on the team including myself and even had a friendly coder share some tips about where to start. The first thing they said was to get familiar with nodejs using the tutorials here.

So I spent a little time going through the tutorial. I got through about 10 videos, but now I’m feeling pretty exhausted. I blame the jetlag. The tutorials are pretty straightforward and easy to follow, which is nice. I’m looking forward to finishing this one hopefully in the next few days.
